ANTHRO 330: Photo Assignments

Professor Karen Nakamura

During the course of the semester, you will need to complete these five photography assignments:

  1. 9/23: "Family"
  2. 9/30: "Community"
  3. 10/14: "Cultural Inventory"
  4. 10/28: "Democracy/Freedom/Equality"
  5. 11/11: "Auto-photoethnography"

The last two (#3, #4 and #5) must be accompanied by a write-up (Anthropology credit: 3-5 pages; Fine-Arts credit 2-3 pages). The write-up should have two components. First a short ethnographic description of the field site and the photographs (i.e., what are we seeing here, in a literal sense). The second component should be an intellectual analysis of photoethnography (i.e, how can we interpret what we see here in terms of anthropological thoery?). You can also talk about the ethics or questions of representation that come up in your project, but please limit this to one page.

Write-ups should be written for an academic audience.
